Tanzania![]() FULL COUNTRY NAME: The Republic of Tanzania LANGUAGES: Kiswahili, English HISTORY: The modern Tanzanian state is formed from the former mainland colony of Tanganyika and the former Protectorate of Zanzibar. Tanganyika was first a German colony, then a League of Nations mandated territory under British administration, then a UN trust territory under British control. Tanganyika achieved independence in 1961. Zanzibar became independent in 1963 and the two merged in 1964 to form Tanzania. OTHER FACTS: 120 different ethnic groups live on the mainland. An East Africa Community was launched in 2001 consisting of Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi and Rwanda. Tanzania is one of the world’s poorest countries. Elim in TanzaniaElim first sent missionaries to Tanzania in 1946 when Tom Nosworthy and Arthur Tate set out to pioneer a missions work in Tanganyika. The great foundations they laid led to the establishment of KEPT – Kanisa la Elim Pentekoste Tanzania (Elim Pentecostal Church of Tanzania) in 1978.
