Elim in Malawi

Initial contact in Malawi had been made in 1984 through a Malawian pastor contacting the Elim missionary working in Zimbabwe. Elim Missions started to work in Malawi in 1987 through Elim New Zealand. This work flourished then in 1997, with about one hundred churches established, Elim New Zealand handed over the work to Elim Missions UK. By 2009 the churches had grown to around 300 divided into ten regions in southern and central Malawi, all rural based in the villages of Malawi. At least six regional centres have been established where schools and orphan work is run by church members. Elim Malawi also initiated a work in Mozambique and in 2005 released fifteen churches to work independently as Elim Mozambique with support from Elim Missions UK.

Every year twelve weekends are devoted to large regional gatherings for conferences and seminars – Malawians love these occasions and enjoy the spiritual ministry.  There is also an active ladies’ ministry and at each church ladies gather on Thursday afternoons to receive practical training and spiritual input.

In 2003 Pastor Ray Cotter of Elim Missions in Northern Ireland initiated a five year project to invest resources in Malawi which has significantly strengthened the work.  A priority has been for the work to ultimately be financially independent and through house rent and goat breeding this is working to see this goal realised.

Each year small and large groups of visitors visit Elim Malawi and strengthen the work in different ways. The Malawian people get really excited and welcome everybody very warmly.
